The biggest airbag recall in US history has had the automotive industry in a stir of a safety crisis. A massive worldwide recall of airbags supplied by the Japanese company Takata has affected over two-dozen car brands and millions of vehicles on the road.
In the event of a car crash, metal pieces and shards from the airbag’s defective inflator and propeller can shoot into occupants of the vehicle. Six deaths and over 100 injuries have been reported thus far as a result of the faulty Takata airbags.
Several lawsuits have already been filed against Takata due to the deaths and injuries of vehicle occupants struck by the metal fragments from the airbag. They are also being investigated by Federal Safety Regulators for an alleged cover-up that has been kept under wraps for at least ten years.
It is purported that they knew about the defective airbags after secretly testing them in 2004 and never reported the results to regulators. Federal Safety Regulators also declare that they concealed and destroyed the test results that confirmed the Takata airbag defects.
How do you know if you are at risk?
If you live in warmer climates and high humidity areas, it can pose an ever-greater threat. The chemical propellant that produces the gas rendering inflation of the airbag was mishandled during the manufacturing process.
As a result, too much force will cause it to break free from the bracket and send out the shrapnel into vehicle occupants. You can find the entire recall list at consumerreports.org or use the VIN Lookup tool to check if your vehicle is listed. If you find your vehicle on the list, take action immediately to have it replaced to avoid a potential injury.
If you or a loved one has been injured from a faulty airbag you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries.
